Protect Your Kids from Electrical Shocks – Install Tamper Resistant Receptacles in You Home

Electrical Safety Tips and Tricks Brought to You by a Residential Electrician

Each year, more than 2,000 children are treated in hospitals for burns and shocks due to defective, poorly installed, or malfunctioning outlets. A major part of these cases are the result of children placing household objects into the outlets. Although there are many ways to childproof your outlets, using tamper resistant receptacles is the most efficient of all. As a residential electrician, I strongly suggest that you do this as soon as possible.

What is a TRR?

Tamper resistant receptacles (TRRs) look similar to standard wall outlets; however, they are designed with spring-loaded cover plates that close off the outlet slots. In order to plug something into these receptacles, you first have to apply equal pressure to both sides of the outlet so that the cover opens up and allows you to insert the plug. This simple, yet efficient design, makes it harder for small kids to place objects into the receptacle.

Why do I need TRRs?

TRRs are designed specifically for reducing (or eliminating completely) the number of cases when children insert different objects into outlets. However, tamper resistant receptacles have other benefits as well. For instance, they offer protection in case any sort of liquid is spilled on the receptacle. Since the openings are closed, water cannot go inside the outlet and cause a short circuit.

Are TRRs effective?

According to the National Electrical Code (NEC), all new construction must be equipped with tamper resistant receptacles. Although they are not commonly used in households, TRRs have been used in pediatric facilities for more than 30 years.

Can I install them myself?

Although they have the same installation principles as regular outlets, they should be installed only by licensed electricians.
